Learning Music through Brass Instruments

Published on September 2, 2010 by in Humor

Instruments resonate in different ways i.e.at different frequencies which give a wide variety of tones as a result of forcing air into the instruments like modern brass instruments.  Trumpet, trombone, baritone, sousaphone (tuba), and French horn all are included in these instruments.

The two types of brass instruments are valves and slide. Instruments used to change the shape and size of the instrument are included in valves like cornet, trumpet, and French horn. While using their embouchure i.e. the position and strength of the lips on the mouthpiece of the instrument, a musician must know how to make the tones lower or higher in pitch the different combinations of valves to produce a particular tone. Slide brass instruments change the tone of the instrument and the length of tubing with the help of a slide. Slide trombone is the most common slide brass instrument.

Brass ensembles could be accompanied by a piano while playing. An experienced pianist can make ensemble’s rehearse the most difficult passages, hence his performance could be improved. But in order to communicate with the group effectively the pianist must be aware of the different keys of each brass instrument.

All the big bands that swing, dance, and jazz include a piano as well with a large number of brass instruments. Many a times a pianist provides help in framing the chord structure, rhythm, and even the melody of the piece. When it comes to chord structure and progressions the music provided by the big bands can be quite complex. While playing the same chord as the grouped brass instruments the pianist can also contribute to the rhythm and style of the music at the same time.

You would be quite surprised to know that instruments like the French horn are not made up of brass at all. Either they are made of nickel silver or some other alloys of copper, tin, and nickel.

Students will learn all about these musical instruments in music lesson plans like these prepared ones from the Fun Music Company.
